Chapter 2 - THE SILENCE THAT FOLLOWED

I sat in my car across the street from St. Catherine’s for an hour after dropping Olivia off. My hands would not stop shaking. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Margaret’s fingers tangled in my daughter’s hair. I saw Daniel standing still, saying nothing.
How could he? How could the man I had married, the man who had held Olivia moments after she was born, stand by and let his mother hurt her?
My phone buzzed. Daniel. Again.
I sent it to voicemail. He had his chance to speak. He chose silence. Now he would have to earn his way back to me—and to his daughter. If he ever could.
Ten minutes later, a text appeared.
*Emma, please answer. Mom is devastated. She didn’t mean it the way it looked. She’s old-fashioned. She loves Olivia. Come home. Let’s fix this together.*
I stared at those words. Devastated? She was the one who had attacked a child. And he was defending her. Minimizing it. Blaming “old-fashioned” values instead of admitting his mother was cruel and he was cowardly.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
*Your daughter was hurt today. You did nothing. Until you can admit that, there is nothing to fix. Stay away from us. And do not come near Olivia until I say so.*
I turned the phone off.
I needed to think. I needed to understand. Why did Margaret despise Olivia from the moment she was born? Why had my father transferred everything to Olivia and told me to keep it secret? Why had he made me promise to protect her “from them” on his deathbed?
I drove to my father’s old study. It was the one place I had kept untouched since he passed. The door still creaked the same way when I pushed it open. The air still smelled like his pipe tobacco and old paper.
I walked to his desk. He had kept everything locked—until the week before he died. Then he had given me the key.
“Keep this safe,” he had said. “And when the time comes… when you see their true faces… open the bottom drawer.”
I pulled the drawer open now. Inside, beneath stacks of old letters and legal files, was a thick manila envelope. No name. No label. Just my initials scrawled in his handwriting in the corner.
My breath caught.
I pulled it out. My hands trembled as I broke the seal.
Inside were documents. Old records. Birth certificates. A handwritten letter, folded carefully.
I unfolded the letter slowly. My father’s handwriting was firm, steady, unmistakable.
*My dearest Emma,*
*If you are reading this, it means the day I feared has come. It means Margaret has shown you her heart. It means you finally understand why I did what I did.*
*Protect Olivia. Guard her truth as fiercely as you guard her life. Because if they find out what I know… they will destroy her. And you along with her.*
I read faster now, my heart hammering against my ribs.
*Margaret has told everyone that Olivia is not Daniel’s daughter. That is why she hates her. That is why she calls her illegitimate. But she is lying. Not about everything… just about the part that matters.*

My blood turned to ice.
*Olivia is Daniel’s child. But Daniel… Daniel is not Margaret’s son.*
