Chapter 9 - The Injunction

Judge Sterling didn't hesitate. He took his heavy metal seal, pressed it firmly against the bottom of our petition, and signed his name with a sharp, decisive stroke of his fountain pen.

“Motion for emergency asset injunction is granted,” Judge Sterling declared, looking straight at Richard and his stunned attorney. “All corporate accounts of Bennett Logistics are hereby frozen pending a federal forensic audit. Furthermore, the residential property at 442 Oakridge Lane is restored immediately to Laura Bennett and her minor children, with a mandatory stay-away order preventing Richard and Evelyn Bennett from coming within five hundred feet of the premises.”

Richard slammed his hand onto the edge of the counsel table. “You can’t do this! I built that company! Mark was just an employee!”

“Mark was the majority equity holder in name, and your fraud just exposed the entire corporate structure to federal seizure,” Judge Sterling replied coldly. “Bailiff, escort Mr. Bennett and his counsel out of chambers. Mrs. Bennett, please remain for a moment.”

As the heavy oak doors closed behind a sputtering, purple-faced Richard and a pale Harrison, I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding since the moment Mark died.

Vance smiled warmly, packing his files into his briefcase. “Well, Laura. The locks on your house belong to you again. And as for Bennett Logistics... your father-in-law is about to find out what happens when you steal from someone who left an audit trail.”
