Chapter 15 - The Final Confrontation

Two weeks later, the civil deposition for the corporate fraud and estate recovery suit took place in a neutral conference room downtown.

Richard Bennett looked ten years older. His expensive suit hung loosely on his frail frame, his hair was uncombed, and the arrogant, untouchable posture he had worn on our porch in the freezing rain was completely gone. Evelyn sat beside him, staring bitterly at the floor, refusing to look at anyone.

I walked into the room accompanied by Marcus Vance and Noah, who insisted on attending to witness the conclusion of the war.

As we took our seats across the table, Richard raised his bloodshot eyes and glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You destroyed everything,” Richard rasped, his voice cracking. “We built that company from nothing. You and my ungrateful son stole it all.”

“You built an empire on theft, Richard,” I replied, my voice calm, clear, and utterly unshakable. “Mark gave you his life, and you repaid him by trying to throw his children into the freezing rain. But you forgot one thing.”

Richard sneered. “What’s that?”

“You forgot who he married,” I said, sliding the final federal audit report across the table toward his defense attorney.

The audit confirmed every single allegation: offshore embezzlement, forged corporate proxies, and systematic fraud. The judge’s final gavel was scheduled for the following Monday, stripping Richard of every remaining share, asset, and title he possessed.

I stood up, smoothed down my blazer, and looked down at my father-in-law one last time.

“Your audit is complete, Richard,” I said quietly. “And you’re completely bankrupt.”
