Chapter 11 - The Counter-Attack

By the following Tuesday, the shockwave of the federal asset freeze had thoroughly demolished whatever remained of Richard Bennett’s corporate authority.

Marcus Vance called me bright and early with an update from downtown.

“Laura, you wouldn't believe the chaos at Bennett Logistics,” Vance said, his voice brimming with professional satisfaction. “Federal auditors stormed the headquarters at 9:00 AM. They seized the primary server banks, locked down the executive suites, and issued a compliance hold on all subsidiary accounts. Richard tried to barricade himself in his office, and campus security had to escort him out.”

I stood in Mark’s home office, holding the phone while looking out at the backyard where Sophie was happily chasing our golden retriever in the autumn sunlight.

“What about Evelyn?” I asked.

“Evelyn is frantically liquidating her private art collection to pay retainer fees for three different criminal defense attorneys, but Judge Sterling already placed a secondary lien on all personal assets acquired through company funds during the last five years,” Vance chuckled. “They’re completely cornered. They thought they could bully a grieving widow, and instead, they triggered a federal RICO investigation into their own shadow accounts.”

“Good,” I said coldly. “They wanted a war. They’re going to get a complete audit down to the last penny.”
