Chapter 12 - An Unexpected Visitor

The doorbell rang at precisely 2:00 PM that afternoon.

Noah was at school, and Sophie was upstairs working on an art project, so I walked to the front door alone. I checked the peephole before unlocking it.

Standing on the porch wasn't Richard or Evelyn. It was David Miller—Mark’s former college roommate and a senior vice president at a rival logistics firm across the state line.

I opened the door, eyeing him warily. “David. What are you doing here?”

David looked exhausted, his tie slightly loosened, holding a thick manila envelope against his chest. “Hello, Laura. I heard about the injunction... and about Mark. I’m so deeply sorry. I couldn't come to the funeral because I was out of the country on a merger, but I had to come see you today.”

“Come in,” I said, stepping aside.

We sat at the kitchen table. David didn't waste any time beating around the bush. He slid the manila envelope across the polished wood toward me.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Three months ago, Mark reached out to me in absolute secrecy,” David said, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. “He knew his health was failing, and he knew his father was actively trying to force him out of Bennett Logistics without a buyout package. He asked me if my firm would be willing to acquire Bennett Logistics’ regional transport contracts the moment his non-compete clause expired or dissolved upon his passing.”

I opened the envelope. Inside were signed letters of intent and preliminary acquisition terms valuing the regional wing at nearly twelve million dollars.

“Mark wanted to make sure that no matter what happened to him, you and the kids had a completely independent lifeline that Richard’s corporate trusts couldn't touch,” David explained. “If you sign these transfer authorizations as executor of Mark’s personal estate, my company will absorb the regional contracts immediately, legally starving Richard of his primary revenue stream.”
