Chapter 10 - Returning to Oakridge Lane

By 1:00 PM that afternoon, my rusted Honda pulled back into the driveway of 442 Oakridge Lane.

The freezing rain had finally cleared, replaced by a sharp, brilliant autumn sun that glinted off the front windows. Noah sat in the passenger seat, a small, triumphant smile playing across his lips for the first time in weeks.

On the front porch, two county sheriff deputies stood waiting. When they saw us pull up, the senior deputy stepped forward, pulling a pair of brass keys from his pocket—the very keys Richard had arrogantly waved the day before.

“Mrs. Bennett?” the deputy asked, touching the brim of his hat. “We served the emergency injunction order to your in-laws about an hour ago. They’ve vacated the premises, and all personal belongings left behind by Mr. Bennett remain untouched.”

He handed me the keys.

I took them, feeling the cool metal against my palm. The sting of where Evelyn had ripped my wedding ring from my finger at the cemetery still throbbed faintly, but looking at these keys, I knew the tide had permanently turned.

“Thank you, Deputy,” I said clearly.

Noah and I walked up the porch steps together. I slid the key into the front door lock. It turned smoothly with a satisfying click.

When I pushed the door open, the familiar scent of Mark’s coffee and cedarwood greeted us from the hallway. His reading glasses still rested on the side table. Sophie’s spelling test was still magneted to the refrigerator.

We were home.

Noah walked into the living room, standing by the large bay window looking out over the yard where his father had taught him to throw a baseball. He turned back to look at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

“We made it back, Mom,” Noah whispered.

“Yes, we did, sweetie,” I said, walking over and pulling my son into a fierce, protective hug. “And we’re never letting anyone take it away again.”
