Chapter 13 - The Signature

I stared at the papers, my heart swelling with a fierce, overwhelming wave of love and grief.
Even from the hospital bed, even while fighting for every breath during his final weeks, Mark had never stopped thinking about us. He had laid out an escape route, building a bridge to safety so that when the inevitable storm hit, we wouldn't drown in the wreckage of his family’s greed.
“Mark was always three steps ahead of them,” I whispered, tracing my fingers across his signature on the preliminary agreements.
“He was brilliant, Laura,” David said softly. “And he loved you more than anything in this world. He knew his parents were monsters long before anyone else did; he just stayed in the business to keep them from destroying the family name entirely. But once he got sick, he realized they weren't just ruthless—they were predators.”
“Let’s finish what he started,” I said, picking up a pen.
I signed every document, authorizing the immediate transfer of the regional transport contracts to David’s firm.

When I handed the papers back, David smiled with immense relief. “It’s done. By tomorrow morning, Bennett Logistics won't just be frozen—they’ll be bleeding out commercially. Richard won't even have enough liquidity to pay his legal defense bills.”
