Chapter 14 - The Family Meeting

That evening, over dinner, I told Noah and Sophie what had happened.

Sophie was mostly excited that we weren't going to be kicked out of our house, happily eating her lasagna while chattering about her school play. But Noah sat quietly across the table, his eyes fixed on his plate before he looked up at me.

“Grandpa Richard called my school today,” Noah said quietly.

My fork froze halfway to my mouth. The temperature in the dining room seemed to drop ten degrees. “He called your school? What did he say?”

“He tried to reach me through the front office claiming there was a family emergency,” Noah said, his jaw tightening. “The principal brought me to the office, and Richard got on the speakerphone. He told me that you were unstable, that you were dragging our family name through the dirt, and that if I didn't convince you to drop the lawsuit, he was going to make sure I never got a dime for college.”

I felt a sudden, hot flash of maternal fury. “Did you talk to him, Noah?”

“I told him he wasn't my grandfather anymore,” Noah replied, his voice completely steady, carrying an echo of Mark’s absolute backbone. “I told him that Dad left us everything we’ll ever need, and that if he ever called my school again, I’d have the sheriff’s department slap a restraining order on him. Then I hung up the phone.”

I stared at my sixteen-year-old son, realizing with a rush of pride that he wasn't just surviving this ordeal—he was becoming a man of unbreakable character.

I reached across the table and squeezed his hand. “You did the right thing, Noah. We are done running from them.”
