Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Shadows

“It was a tactical judgment call!” Daniel suddenly snapped, his voice rising in hysterical desperation as the facade completely shattered. “You don't understand how bad it was out there! The whole sector was hot! If we stayed five minutes longer, we all would have died!”

The hallway fell into a stunned, icy silence.

My father staggered backward half a step, catching himself against the oak-paneled wall. “You... you retreated? You left your post?”

“I saved my skin, yes!” Daniel shouted, losing all composure. “And if I hadn't covered the retreat the way I did, the brass would have court-martialed me! I had to doctor the logs to protect my career!”

My mother stared at her golden son as if she were seeing a complete stranger. “Daniel... no. You’re our son. You’re the pride of this family...”

“I did everything you ever asked for!” Daniel turned his fury toward our parents, his voice breaking with bitter resentment. “You put me on a pedestal I never asked for! You demanded perfection every single second of my life! And when I finally cracked under pressure, when I made a mistake, I had to lie just to keep you from looking at me the way you looked at Emily!”

He pointed a shaking finger directly at my chest, his eyes blazing with malice.

“And then she stayed behind. She went back into the burning compound, she grabbed the hard drives, and she made me look like a coward without even trying! She ruined everything!”

Aunt Linda gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth. My father looked as though he had aged ten years in a single minute.

And I stood there, watching the house of cards my family had built on lies finally collapse into dust.
