Chapter 12 - A Knock on the Door

At 10:00 AM, a soft knock echoed at my apartment door.

When I opened it, I found my father standing in the hallway. He looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His shoulders were slumped, his tailored suit jacket wrinkled, and his eyes carried the heavy, haunted look of a man whose entire worldview had just collapsed.

“Emily,” he said, his voice cracking slightly. “May I... may I come in?”

I stepped aside, holding the door open. “Come in, Dad.”

He walked slowly into the living room, looking around the orderly, minimalist space as if he were seeing it for the first time. He didn't sit down. He stood near the window, staring out at the distant treeline.

“Your mother is... she’s beside herself,” my father whispered, staring at his hands. “She hasn't stopped crying since we left the gala. She tried calling Daniel’s defense counsel, but... but there’s nothing anyone can do. The charges are federal. The falsification of combat records and the abandonment of a unit under fire... it’s severe.”

“He lied to protect a fragile ego, Dad,” I said calmly, pouring a cup of black coffee and setting it on the small table. “And you and Mom let him do it by making him believe that failing was the worst thing a person could possibly do.”

My father turned slowly, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “We were blind. We focused so hard on the trophies, on the public image, on the idea of what our family was supposed to be... that we completely ignored the daughter who was actually carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.”

He looked directly at the Silver Star pinned to my uniform.

“I am so sorry, Emily,” he choked out, his voice breaking. “Not just for last night. For your entire life. We never saw you.”
