Chapter 14 - The New Command

Three weeks later, the transition to my new assignment at the Pentagon was fully underway.

My office on the E-Ring was spacious, quiet, and functional—a far cry from the dusty administrative corner my parents had always imagined for me. Through the large security glass windows, I could see the steady hum of military analysts, intelligence officers, and strategists collaborating on global defense architecture.

My executive officer, a sharp and brilliant young captain named Sarah, walked into my office carrying a stack of encrypted briefings.

“Colonel Carter, the Joint Chiefs have approved your strategic framework for the upcoming Eastern European intelligence integration,” Sarah reported crisply, laying the files on my desk. “They want you to brief the congressional oversight committee next Tuesday.”

I looked down at the documents, a confident smile touching my lips. “Tell them I’ll be ready.”

“Yes, ma'am.” Sarah hesitated for a second, then smiled. “By the way, there’s a civilian delegation downstairs requesting an audience. Your father and mother are in the visitor lobby. They asked if you would be willing to speak with them for five minutes.”

I paused, leaning back in my leather chair.

For thirty years, my entire existence had been defined by whether my parents chose to look my way. Now, my time, my energy, and my focus belonged entirely to my duty, my team, and my own path.

“Tell them,” I said calmly, “that I’m currently scheduled for a strategic briefing, but my office can arrange a brief meeting on Friday afternoon—if they schedule it through the front desk like everyone else.”

Sarah’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, followed by a subtle, approving grin. “Right away, Colonel.”
