Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

A month after the trial concluded, I received an unexpected package at my Pentagon office.
It was a heavy, unmarked cardboard box shipped from our childhood home. Inside, there were no football trophies, no framed newspaper clippings of Daniel, and no society banquet photographs.
Instead, at the very top of the box, resting on a bed of old tissue paper, was a single, faded photograph of me at age seven, sitting on the front porch steps, holding a small toy airplane and smiling up at the camera with a bright, fearless expression.
Beneath it was a handwritten note from my father:
“We found this in the back of the attic, tucked behind Daniel’s old track medals. We thought it belonged to you now. We are trying to learn how to see the daughter who was always there. Take care of yourself, Colonel.”
I smiled, carefully placing the photograph on the corner of my large mahogany desk, right beside my operational briefing binders and my secure comms terminal.
