I walked over, standing just a few feet away from him.

“An apology doesn't rewrite the past, Dad,” I said steadily, neither harsh nor forgiving, just entirely honest. “I didn't earn that medal so you and Mom could put it on a mantle next to Daniel’s football trophies. I earned it because men and women in my unit trusted me with their lives when things got dark.”

My father nodded slowly, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with a trembling hand. “I know. I don’t expect you to forgive us overnight. Or ever. But I needed to come here and tell you... I’m proud of you. Truly proud.”

“Thank you,” I replied quietly.

He stayed for a few minutes longer, speaking softly about how they intended to handle Daniel's upcoming legal proceedings with absolute honesty rather than more cover-ups. When he finally left, closing the door softly behind him, I didn't feel angry. I felt like an adult finally standing face-to-face with people who were just as flawed and broken as anyone else.
