Chapter 10 - Walking Out into the Light

Daniel didn't fight back. He couldn't.

He lowered his head in utter defeat, his shoulders slumping as the military police officers stepped forward, gently taking him by the arms and turning him toward the exit.

My mother let out a low, agonizing sob, collapsing against my father’s shoulder. For the first time in my life, my father didn't look away, and he didn't rush to defend his son. He simply stood there, staring down the empty hallway, utterly crushed by the reality of what his obsession with perfection had wrought.

Aunt Linda stood frozen, unable to meet my eyes.

I turned away from them, adjusting the collar of my dress uniform. The heavy brass of the Silver Star gleamed brilliantly against the dark blue fabric under the overhead lights.

I walked back down the corridor toward the grand ballroom, leaving the ghosts of my family’s past behind me in the shadows.

The music had stopped playing, but the ballroom doors were open wide, framing the warm, inviting light of the evening outside. When I stepped back into the main hall, a few remaining senior officers turned to look at me, offering respectful nods and quiet, dignified smiles.

I walked out through the double doors and down the grand stone steps of the Fort Liberty center into the cool, refreshing night air.

For my entire life, I had lived in the shadow of a golden boy who never truly existed. Now, the darkness was gone, the truth was out, and under the wide, starry North Carolina sky, I was finally standing entirely in my own light.
