Chapter 3 - The Silence of the Room

The name dropped into the ballroom like a live grenade.

Lieutenant Colonel Emily Carter.

For three full seconds, the massive hall was entirely, suffocatingly silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the polished marble floor.

My mother’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She blinked rapidly, her gaze snapping back and forth between the stage and me as if her brain refused to process the syllables.

Aunt Linda’s champagne flute hovered halfway to her mouth, her fingers frozen around the stem.

And Daniel? Daniel looked as though he had just been struck across the face. His face went chalk-white, his breathing shallow and rapid. He stared at me with an expression of sheer, unadulterated horror—the look of a man watching a ghost climb out of a grave he had personally dug.

My father turned slowly toward Daniel, his voice trembling slightly. “Daniel... did he just say... Emily?”

Daniel couldn't speak. He couldn't even nod.

I smoothed down the front of my jacket, stepped past my frozen family members, and walked straight down the center aisle. Every head in the ballroom turned. Senior officers, senators, and foreign attachés watched me with solemn, respectful curiosity as I marched toward the stage.

As I approached the steps, the military band struck up a brisk, formal cadence.

I climbed the steps with absolute precision, stopping two paces away from the major general. I snapped a crisp, flawless salute.

The general returned the salute, his eyes warm with deep, professional respect. He reached down and took a heavy velvet case from the hands of an aide standing beside him.

The room watched in absolute thrall as he popped the brass clasp of the velvet box.

Inside, resting against dark blue satin, gleamed the Silver Star—the third-highest military decoration for valor in combat, accompanied by its distinctive blue, white, and red ribbon.
