Chapter 9 - The Hidden MechanismDawn was still hours away, but the urgency in the air felt suffocating. We couldn't wait for morning.

Armed with the architectural blueprint and a heavy-duty flashlight, Mark and I returned to the spot beside the staircase where the crystal horse had stood. Following the precise measurements noted by Victor Vance on the parchment, we began testing the individual hardwood planks.
“According to this scale,” I murmured, shining the flashlight at a specific corner of the baseboard, “there should be a manual release pin concealed behind the decorative molding.”
Mark dropped to his knees beside me, his fingers searching frantically along the ornate wooden trim. He pressed his thumb against a carved wooden rosette.
With a soft, mechanical click, a small section of the baseboard popped outward.
Inside the cavity sat a heavy iron lever, rusted with age.
“That’s it,” Mark whispered.
Without hesitation, Mark grabbed the iron lever and pulled downward. A loud, grinding groan echoed through the floorboards as a three-foot square section of the hardwood flooring smoothly unlocked, lifting slightly on hidden hydraulic pistons.
A rush of cold, stagnant air billowed up from the dark void below—smelling of old dust, sealed earth, and a lingering, faint trace of chemical antiseptic.
Mark coughed, waving his hand to clear the air, and aimed his flashlight down into the abyss.
The beam sliced through the absolute darkness, illuminating a steep set of concrete steps leading down into a windowless subterranean bunker.

And sitting right at the bottom of the stairs, surrounded by metal filing cabinets and old wooden crates, was a small, locked metal box with a modern digital keypad glowing a faint, eerie blue.
Someone had been down there very recently.
