Chapter 18 - The Telescope’s True PurposeMonths had passed since that chaotic birthday party, and autumn rolled around once more, bringing with it crisp evening air and impossibly clear Texas starlight.

One Friday night, a heavy cardboard box arrived on the front porch. Mark hauled it into the living room and unpacked its contents with a grin.

It was the telescope I had bought Lily for her ninth birthday—the gift that had been shoved aside in the panic of the shattered crystal horse.

“Alright, junior astronomer,” Mark announced, setting the precision optical instrument up near the expansive living room bay window facing the southern sky. “Time to see what you’ve been missing.”

Lily gasped in pure delight. She adjusted the lens, peering through the eyepiece with rapt attention.

“Grandpa, Dad! Look! I can see them! I can see the rings of Saturn!” Lily whispered in awe, stepping back to let us take turns.

I leaned down, peered through the glass, and marvelled at the distant, glittering rings suspended in the vast, infinite dark of space. It struck me how much like astronomy life could be: sometimes you have to navigate through immense darkness and chaos to finally find the brilliant, beautiful lights that were there all along.
