Chapter 11 - Footsteps Above the VaultThe sound of sharp, rhythmic heels clicking against the hardwood floor above our heads sent a jolt of ice down my spine.

“She’s back,” Mark hissed, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper as he instinctively reached out to grab my arm. “And she brought someone with her—listen.”
We froze in the dim, stale air of the subterranean bunker. From the living room upstairs came a second, heavier set of footsteps—deep, dragging, and purposeful. A low, gravelly male voice rumbled through the floorboards, muffled by the thickness of the insulation.
“Hurry up and unlock the panel, Vanessa,” a man’s voice snapped. “If Bennett or his son find those files, we’re both facing federal prison time. The asset transfer hasn't cleared yet.”
“I told you, I lost my primary key in the driveway when I left,” Vanessa’s voice hissed back, dripping with panic and frustration. “Just use the emergency override code on the keypad by the baseboard. It’s right behind the molding.”

Mark’s eyes widened in absolute horror. He looked at me, his face pale in the glow of the flashlight. The emergency override code. If Vanessa and her accomplice punched it in, the hydraulic floor panel above us would slam shut, locking us inside the vault indefinitely.
We were trapped.
