Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the HouseBy 4:00 AM, the police had cleared the property, carting away the filing cabinets, the hard drives, and the vault documents as evidence for a grand jury investigation.

The house was profoundly quiet.
Mark sat on the edge of the living room sofa, staring blankly down at the gaping square hole in the floor where the vault had been exposed. The weight of the truth—that Sarah’s death had not been an act of nature, but a calculated murder executed by greed—was a heavy cross to bear, but the fog of deception had finally been blown away by the harsh wind of reality.
I walked over, carrying a cup of hot black coffee, and set it down on the coffee table before sitting beside him.
“How are you holding up, son?” I asked softly.
Mark looked up, his eyes bloodshot, but for the first time in three years, the haunted look of confusion was entirely gone. His gaze was clear, steady, and resolute.
“I’m angry, Dad,” Mark said quietly. “For three years, I let my guard down. I let monsters into my home because I was too blind to see what was right in front of me.”
“You survived it, Mark,” I reminded him, resting a hand on his shoulder. “And more importantly, you protected Lily.”
Upstairs, the soft patter of small feet echoed down the hallway. A moment later, Lily appeared at the top of the stairs, wearing her favorite dinosaur pajamas, holding her stuffed rabbit under one arm. She rubbed her eyes sleepily and looked down at us.
“Daddy? Grandpa?” Lily called out, her voice timid. “Are the bad people gone?”
Mark stood up immediately, walking over to the stairs and meeting his daughter halfway. He scooped her up into his arms, burying his face in her hair as tears spilled over his lashes.
“They’re gone, bug,” Mark whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “They’re never coming back.”

Lily wrapped her arms around his neck, looking over his shoulder toward me with a sleepy, reassuring smile.
The sun began to crest over the horizon outside the large living room windows, casting a warm, golden amber light across the hardwood floor, bathing the house in a brilliant, untainted dawn.
