Chapter 10 - Secrets of the VaultMark swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the open floor panel.

“Dad... should we go down there?” Mark asked, the reality of what we were uncovering finally hitting home.

“We have to,” I replied firmly. “This is the center of everything Vanessa has been protecting.”

I took the flashlight from his hand, stepped carefully onto the top concrete step, and began descending into the dark vault, with Mark right behind me. The concrete walls were thick, reinforced with steel mesh—a Cold War-era fallout shelter converted decades later into something far more sinister.

We reached the bottom floor. The metal filing cabinets lining the walls were unlocked. Mark pulled open the top drawer, and the beam of light caught a thick stack of manila folders labeled with names, financial records, and medical files.

I picked up the topmost file and opened it.

My breath caught in my throat. It wasn't just corporate embezzlement records. It was a complete collection of identity documents, birth certificates, and medical reports belonging to Sarah—my late daughter, Lily’s mother.

And right beside them was a detailed ledger tracking mysterious medical treatments administered during the final months of Sarah’s life, signed by a private physician whose license had been revoked five years ago.

The pieces clicked together in a terrifying, crystal-clear picture.

Sarah’s sudden, tragic illness three years ago hadn't been an accident of nature. It had been systematically engineered, monitored, and covered up by the very people who wanted absolute control over the family estate.

And Vanessa had been the primary custodian of the vault.

Before Mark could even process the horrifying revelation, the heavy front door upstairs slammed shut with a resounding echo, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps marching across the living room floor directly above our heads.

Vanessa had returned. And she wasn't alone.
