Chapter 14 - The Sirens OutsideFlashing red and blue lights instantly painted the white walls of the foyer in a chaotic strobe pattern.

Parked in the driveway were three local police cruisers and an unmarked federal vehicle, their sirens wailing into the quiet Texas night.
Vanessa’s knees buckled. “Who... who called the police?” she whispered in absolute horror.
From behind the semicircle of police officers stepping through the front door walked my sister Helen, holding a mobile phone to her ear, looking completely unbothered.
“I did, dear,” Helen said sweetly from the doorway. “When you two sped back into the driveway like a pair of fleeing bank robbers, I figured it was a good time to check in with my contacts at the Dallas district attorney’s office. Turns out, federal warrants for corporate racketeering and medical fraud tend to get processed very quickly when you mention the Vance family name.”
Arthur Vance’s face went slack. He tried to reach into his coat pocket for his phone, but two local police officers lunged forward instantly, wrestling his arms behind his back and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
“You can’t do this! Do you know who I am?” Arthur shrieked as they dragged him toward the door.

“Yeah, a criminal,” one of the officers muttered, shoving him outside.
Two other officers approached Vanessa, who didn't even try to run. She stood frozen, staring blankly at the floor as the cold metal cuffs clicked around her wrists, her illusions of suburban perfection shattered permanently into the hardwood.
