Chapter 19 - Foundations of Stone and HeartBy the time Lily’s tenth birthday arrived, the atmosphere in the house was unrecognizable from the year before. There were no fake high-society guests, no fragile museum displays, and no toxic tension hiding beneath the surface.

Instead, the house was filled with the sounds of genuine friends from school, neighborhood kids, good food, and uninhibited laughter.

During the party, Mark stood up at the head of the dining table, raising a glass of sparkling cider.

“I want to toast the two people who saved this family,” Mark said, looking first toward me, and then down at Lily. “For a long time, I thought being a father meant managing expectations and keeping up appearances. My father taught me that true strength isn't about maintaining a perfect facade—it’s about listening, standing up for the truth, and protecting the ones you love no matter what.”

Lily beamed proudly, her eyes shining with happiness, and raised her juice glass to mine.

I clinked my glass against hers, feeling a deep, abiding warmth fill my chest. The rule I had lived by for three years—do not interfere—was gone forever. I had learned that protecting family isn't interference; it’s an absolute duty.
