Chapter 8 - Breaking the Chain

The silence that followed Phyllis’s departure was suffocating.

I didn't waste a second chasing her. My immediate priority was the woman shivering on the kitchen floor.

I dropped to my knees beside Clara, pulling her into my arms, pressing her head against my chest as she finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

“I’m so sorry, Clara. I am so, so sorry,” I whispered over and over, kissing her forehead. “I had no idea. I swear to God, I had no idea what kind of monster my mother was.”

“I know, Marcus... I know,” Clara sobbed, her fingers gripping my jacket. “She... she told me all sorts of things while you were gone. She said you only married me out of pity. She said you’d leave the moment you saw how broken I was.”

“She lied,” I said fiercely, pulling back to look directly into her eyes. “She lied about everything. We’re going to get through this, do you hear me? Together.”

I carefully scooped Clara up into my arms, ignoring the dull ache in my own muscles, and carried her out of the cold kitchen into the warm, safe sanctuary of our living room. I propped her legs up gently on a pile of plush pillows on the sofa, making sure she was completely secure.

“Stay right here,” I instructed gently. “I’m going to get you some water and your pain medication.”

As I walked back toward the kitchen, my mind raced. Phyllis had locked us in, but she had underestimated one crucial detail: she had left her smartphone sitting right beside her teacup on the kitchen island in her hasty retreat.

I grabbed her phone, bypassed the simple pattern lock using a trick she had foolishly taught me years ago, and dialed my cousin Sarah’s number.

Sarah picked up on the first ring.

“Marcus? Are you okay? I saw your mother drive away like a bat out of hell!”

“Sarah, listen to me carefully,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “Phyllis locked us inside our house and padlocked the exterior gate. I need you to call the police right now. Tell them there’s an active domestic confinement situation at my address, and tell them about the murder documents hidden in the leather album on my kitchen floor.”

Sarah’s gasp echoed through the receiver. “Murder documents? Marcus, what are you talking about?”

“I’ll explain everything when the cops get here. Just call them, Sarah. Now.”
