Chapter 16 - Letters from the Past

The morning sun filtered through the brand-new, open-concept kitchen windows, casting a warm golden glow across the gleaming quartz countertops where the old, oppressive spice rack used to hang.

I was pouring two fresh cups of coffee when the mail carrier dropped a heavy, official-looking parcel through the front slot.

Clara walked into the kitchen, her steps steady and sure as she completed her daily physical therapy exercises. The heavy fiberglass casts were long gone, replaced by the quiet strength of her own recovered stride.

“What’s that?” Clara asked, nodding toward the thick manila envelope sitting on the island.

“Another update from the Travis County probate court,” I said, tearing open the seal. “The estate liquidation is finally finalized. The assets tied to my mother’s fraudulent accounts are being officially redirected into a trust fund dedicated to historical preservation and victim advocacy in my father’s real name—Arthur Pendelton.”

Clara smiled softly, walking over to wrap her arms around my waist, resting her chin against my chest. “Your real name, too, Marcus. Have you thought about it?”

I looked down at the legal papers bearing the name Marcus Pendelton. For years, that name had belonged to a ghost, a weaponized secret locked away in a dark basement. Now, it felt like a reclamation—a clean slate untainted by my mother’s crimes.

“I think,” I murmured, kissing the top of her head, “it’s time to officially leave Marcus Vance behind. We’ve earned a clean break.”
