Chapter 11 - The Subpoena and the Silence

The morning after my mother’s arrest, the mailbox felt less like a drop-off point for daily mail and more like an evidence locker.

By Tuesday afternoon, official correspondence from the Travis County District Attorney’s office had arrived, along with a formal notice from the probate court regarding the estate assets tied to my father’s name. The web of financial manipulation Phyllis had spun over two decades was beginning to unravel at a dizzying pace. Every bank account, every title deed, and every hidden safe-deposit box was now under court-mandated audit.

I sat at the kitchen island, surrounded by thick stacks of legal files, cross-referencing tax returns from the late nineties.

Clara rolled herself into the kitchen in a rented medical wheelchair, her casts propped up comfortably on the footrest. She carried two mugs of steaming coffee and set one down beside my laptop.

“You’ve been staring at those numbers for three hours, Marcus,” Clara said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Take a break. You can’t untangle twenty-five years of criminal deception in a single afternoon.”

I looked up, letting out a heavy sigh, and rubbed my tired eyes. “It’s just staggering, Clara. Every time I think I’ve seen the bottom of it, another layer of lies surfaces. I grew up believing I was a protected son, when in reality, I was just a prop in an alibi.”

“You were a victim of her control, just like everyone else she touched,” Clara reminded me, her voice steady and grounding. “Don’t let her posthumous paperwork steal any more of your peace.”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the counter. Caller ID: Detective Miller.

I swiped to answer immediately.

“Vance,” I said.

“Mr. Vance, we’ve finished our initial sweep of your mother’s apartment downtown,” Detective Miller said, his tone brisk and professional. “We found something in her personal safe that you need to see. Can you and your attorney come down to the precinct this afternoon?”
