Chapter 18 - Reaching Out to Family

The discovery of the locket prompted a decision I had been putting off for weeks.

Through the estate documents, Detective Miller had helped me locate living descendants of the Pendelton family—second cousins I never knew I had, living just two states over in Oklahoma.

On a quiet Sunday evening, I sat at my laptop and composed an email to a woman named Sarah Pendelton—a history teacher who shared my grandfather’s facial structure.

I didn't hide anything. I told her the whole truth about what happened, who I was, and how my mother had hidden our true lineage behind a wall of lies. I attached photographs of the locket and the legal documents proving our bloodline.

For three days, there was no reply.

I didn't blame them. If someone had emailed me out of nowhere claiming to be the secret grandson of a murdered relative, I would have thought it was a scam, too.

Then, on Wednesday morning, my phone chimed.

An email from Sarah Pendelton:

> “Marcus, I received your message. At first, I thought it was some kind of sick joke. But I showed the locket photographs to my mother—she cried for an hour because she thought those family heirlooms were lost forever when great-uncle Arthur vanished in 2001. We know you had nothing to do with what your mother did. We would love to talk to you. Welcome home, cousin.”

Reading those words, a profound sense of orphanhood that I hadn't even realized I was carrying finally melted away. I wasn't just a survivor of a toxic legacy; I belonged to a real family.
