Chapter 13 - Returning Home

When Clara and I returned home that evening, the house felt lighter, as if the oxygen had finally been restored after a long, suffocating winter.

Clara maneuvered her wheelchair into the living room while I brewed a pot of tea. The medical prognosis from her orthopedic surgeon earlier that morning had brought good news: her bones were knitting together cleanly, and within another month, she would begin physical therapy to walk again.

“So, what did Detective Miller show you?” Clara asked softly as I handed her a mug of tea.

I sat down on the sofa across from her, recounting the details of the meeting—the hidden family, the real Arthur Pendelton, and the confirmation from the DA that our future was legally secure.

“It’s over, Clara,” I said, looking out the window at the twilight sky. “The lies are exposed. The police have everything they need to ensure she never sees the outside of a prison cell again. We can finally breathe.”

Clara set her mug down, wheeled herself closer, and reached out to take my hand. Her fingers were warm and steady.

“We survived the storm, Marcus,” she said, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “Your mother tried to break us, but all she did was prove how strong we really are together.”

I pulled her into a gentle embrace, burying my face in her hair, knowing that whatever scars remained from the past, our foundation was stronger than anything my mother could ever dismantle.
