Chapter 12 - The Evidence Locker

The precinct interview room smelled of stale coffee, industrial cleaner, and old paper.

Detective Miller slid a thick manila folder across the metal table, opening it to reveal a collection of items recovered from Phyllis’s private safe. There were bank statements, a passport under an alias, and a small, faded Polaroid photograph.

I leaned forward, my eyes locking onto the photo. It showed my father, Richard Vance, smiling beside a young woman who wasn't Phyllis—a woman I had never seen before in my life.

“Recognize her?” Detective Miller asked, tapping the edge of the photo.

“Never seen her before,” I replied, shaking my head. “Who is she?”

“That’s Clara Pendelton—Arthur Pendelton’s sister,” Detective Miller explained. “According to our records, your mother didn't just target Richard for his family’s shipping business; she systematically isolated him from his entire bloodline. When Arthur tried to intervene back in 2001, threatening to go to the authorities about the financial fraud, your mother silenced him permanently. She then took your father’s name, assumed a false identity for the estate transfers, and raised you under total isolation.”

The room seemed to spin slightly. The horrifying depth of my mother’s sociopathy had no bottom. She hadn't just committed a murder; she had fabricated an entire lineage, trapping everyone around her in a prison built on deceit.

“What happens to the estate now?” I asked, my voice tight.

“The courts will begin the process of restitution to the rightful heirs—the remaining Pendelton family members,” Detective Miller said. “As for you, Mr. Vance, because you were completely unaware of the financial layering and were a minor when the initial fraud occurred, the DA’s office considers you a victim of your mother’s psychological and financial abuse, not an accomplice. You are in the clear.”

A massive weight lifted off my chest, though the air in the room still felt heavy with the ghosts of the past.
