Chapter 9 - The Counter-StrikeBy the following morning, the legal counter-offensive was already in motion.

I sat at my desk in the home office, my dual monitors alive with cascading code streams, financial ledger cross-references, and encrypted communication channels linking me directly to Marcus Vance’s Division 9 investigative team in San Diego and Julian Sterling’s corporate litigation squad in New York.
We weren't just fighting a civil property dispute anymore. We were dismantling an elite, white-collar financial cartel operating under the guise of respectable family wealth.
My phone buzzed against the desk. An incoming encrypted call from Marcus.
I clicked accept, and his raspy, no-nonsense voice filled my speakers.
“Director Hayes, we’ve got movement,” Marcus said without preamble. “Federal marshals just raided Meridian Apex’s primary administrative offices in Manhattan. They seized the physical server banks, freezing all corporate liquidity across their domestic accounts.”
“And Daniel?” I asked, keeping my voice completely steady.
“We picked him up two hours ago at a coffee shop in Westchester County trying to board a commuter train north with two burner phones and a passport. He’s currently sitting in an interrogation room at the federal holding facility in Newark.”
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the endless blue horizon. “Did he say anything?”
“He tried crying about family loyalty for about three minutes,” Marcus muttered dryly. “Then he realized we had his digital signature on the offshore wire transfers routing stolen defense funds through his personal account. He’s singing like a canary, Claire. He’s already given us Evelyn’s direct instructions on how they forged your signature for the Cape May property.”
“Good,” I said coldly. “Make sure his deposition is notarized and time-stamped. I want every single member of that family legally barred from coming within five hundred miles of this coastline.”
Before Marcus could answer, a second notification flashed across my computer screen—an urgent security alert from my residential gate camera.
A black luxury SUV had just pulled up directly outside the front gates of the Cape May estate.
Through the crisp high-definition video feed, I watched the doors swing open. Evelyn stepped out, dressed in an expensive cream-colored trench coat, her face twisted in an expression of absolute, unbridled fury. Behind her, Melissa stumbled out of the passenger seat, clutching her phone and looking like she was on the verge of hysterical collapse.

They weren't bringing lawyers this time. They were coming to beg, scream, or try to bully their way back into my house.
I tapped my microphone key. “Hold on, Marcus. I have unwanted visitors at the front gate.”
