I stood on the second-floor balcony of the blue cedar house, wrapped in a dark wool coat, holding a steaming cup of coffee. The ocean stretched out endlessly before me, meeting the crisp horizon in a seamless line of deep, magnificent blue.

Every square inch of the land beneath my feet belonged to me. Every algorithm, patent, and venture tied to my name was fiercely protected and entirely under my control.

They had called me cold. They had called me an outsider. They had tried to make me an invisible tenant in a house I built with my own hands.

Now, looking out over the roaring Atlantic waves, I knew the truth.
