Chapter 14 - The Return of the Ocean BreezeTwo weeks after the raids, the autumn air in Cape May turned crisp, carrying the sharp, invigorating scent of salt and turning the ocean waves a deep, stormy indigo.

The blue cedar house was entirely mine.
No ghost of a bad marriage lingered in the hallways. No laminated sheets of rules mocked me from the kitchen island. I had replaced the quartz countertops with dark, honed soapstone, and the back deck—the one they had tried to illegally expand behind my back—was now redesigned into a stunning, minimalist architectural terrace that looked straight out toward the horizon.
I sat at the wooden dining table with a cup of black coffee, reviewing the final restructuring documents for my firm. My phone chimed softly.
It wasn't a lawyer, and it wasn't a process server.
It was an email notification from Marcus Vance.
“Subject: Case Closure / Sentencing Update.
Claire, just received word from the U.S. District Court in Newark. Arthur and Evelyn Mercer pled guilty to interstate wire fraud and financial conspiracy under a plea deal to avoid a maximum twenty-year federal sentence. Their primary estate in Westchester has been fully liquidated to satisfy municipal restitution liens. Daniel received a mandatory five-year minimum security sentence with no parole eligibility for two years. The chapter is officially closed.”
I stared at the screen, reading the words twice.

There was no sense of triumph that made me want to celebrate, and no lingering bitterness that made me want to weep. Just a deep, profound sense of closure. They had tried to cage me in a system of their own design, assuming I was nothing more than an outsider they could train and domesticate.
Instead, I had taken their system apart piece by piece, locking them out of the very kingdom they tried to steal.
