Chapter 12 - The Federal Holding FacilityIn the sterile, fluorescent-lit visitor holding area of the federal detention facility in Newark, Daniel sat behind a thick sheet of reinforced Plexiglas, staring at his own reflection.

The expensive Italian wool suit he had worn when we first met was gone, replaced by a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his eyes dark with exhaustion and unrelenting panic.

The heavy steel door of the booth clicked open, and I walked in, wearing my tailored charcoal blazer and carrying a single manila folder. I didn't look like the compliant, quiet tech wife he had tried to manipulate for four years. I looked like a prosecutor delivering a final verdict.

I sat down on the metal stool, picked up the audio receiver, and slid the plastic partition.

Daniel snatched up his receiver instantly, his voice cracking with desperate urgency. “Claire! Thank God. Look, you have to listen to me. Mom and Dad—they orchestrated the whole thing. They told me if I didn’t get your signature on the corporate transfer documents, they’d cut me off from the family trust. I was just... I was just trying to keep them happy. I never meant for it to go this far.”

I listened to him, my expression entirely neutral. There was no anger left in my chest—only a profound, cold clarity.

“You’re thirty-two years old, Daniel,” I said, my voice coming through the speaker with absolute calm. “You forged my signature. You partnered with a corporate raiding firm to steal my intellectual property. You tried to encumber my private home with a fraudulent HELOC.”

“We can fix this!” Daniel pleaded, tears spilling over his lower eyelids. “We’re still married! Drop the civil asset charges, and we can file a joint defense. The courts can’t compel spouses to testify against each other if—”

“We aren't filing anything together, Daniel,” I interrupted softly. “My legal team filed the uncontested annulment and fraud-based divorce petition this morning. Under the emergency asset forfeiture clauses, every cent of marital debt you accumulated through your private club accounts and gambling syndicates has been legally severed from my personal trust.”

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening in silent horror. “You’re leaving me to take the fall for the whole conspiracy?”

May you like

“No, Daniel,” I corrected, standing up and slipping the folder back under my arm. “You’re taking the fall because you built a life out of lies. Enjoy the federal holding facility. It’s the first real work you’ve ever done.”

I hung up the receiver, turned around, and walked out of the booth, leaving him alone in the silence.
