Chapter 11 - The Westchester CollapseWhile the Cape May coastline remained bathed in crisp autumn sunlight, seventy miles north in Westchester County, the high-walled manor of the Mercer family was experiencing a very different kind of weather.

By Tuesday afternoon, federal marshals and local municipal bailiffs had surrounded the sprawling stone estate. Sirens were replaced by the monotonous, heavy thud of file boxes being packed into black transit vans.

Evelyn sat rigidly in a velvet armchair in her sunroom, refusing to stand, watching federal agents tag antique oil paintings and corporate portfolio binders with neon orange seizure stickers. Her husband, Arthur—whose health had steadily deteriorated ever since the initial corporate audit hit—sat across from her in a motorized wheelchair, staring blankly at a blank television screen.

“You can’t do this,” Arthur muttered, his voice weak and trembling. “I’m on the board of trustees for the regional banking council. I know senators.”

“You knew senators, Mr. Mercer,” the lead federal marshal replied without looking up from his clipboard, slapping a seizure seal across a mahogany side table. “Right now, you’re an unindicted co-conspirator in an interstate wire fraud and asset-stripping syndicate led by Meridian Apex Holdings. I’d advise you to save your breath for your arraignment.”

Melissa stood near the French doors, frantically dialing her friends on her smartphone, only to find her accounts locked, her credit cards declined, and her social media accounts flooded with automated comments about her family’s financial collapse. The illusion of untouchable, aristocratic wealth had vanished in less than forty-eight hours, leaving behind the hollow, rotting core of a family built entirely on fraud, intimidation, and entitlement.
