Chapter 10 - The Queen’s GambitI walked down the grand staircase, my heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor, and pushed open the heavy front door.

I didn't step outside onto the porch. I stood in the open doorway, letting the cool ocean breeze wash over me, watching Evelyn and Melissa march up the stone pathway like an invading army whose supply lines had just been cut to ribbons.

“Claire!” Evelyn shrieked, stopping ten feet short of the front porch steps, pointing a manicured finger directly at my face. “You absolute lunatic! What is the meaning of this? The federal marshals just raided our family holding firm! Your husband—our son—has been arrested by armed agents!”

Melissa was sobbing openly now, her mascara running down her cheeks. “You ruined us! You’re a psychotic, ungrateful little monster! Dad had to take heart medication an hour ago because of what you did!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply crossed my arms over my chest and looked down at them with the detached clinical curiosity one might reserve for insects crawling across a clean kitchen floor.

“You forged my signature,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard. “You tried to steal my property equity through a fraudulent HELOC scheme. You planted your spineless son to orchestrate a corporate IP heist against my startup. And you honestly believed there wouldn't be consequences?”

Evelyn’s face turned a mottled, furious shade of crimson. She lunged forward, attempting to climb the stairs, but the automated security bollards at the base of the porch rose smoothly out of the stone with a sharp clack, blocking her path.

“We are family!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Blood is thicker than your stupid tech contracts! Daniel loved you!”

“Daniel loved the idea of never having to work a day in his life while siphoning my capital to fund his debts,” I replied, stepping slightly forward. “And you loved the idea of turning my sanctuary into your personal family resort while plotting how to strip me of everything I built.”

I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out a thick envelope stamped with federal court seals, and tossed it down onto the stone steps between them.

“That’s the preliminary civil asset forfeiture notice,” I said evenly. “Every piece of real estate, every corporate share, and every offshore account tied to Meridian Apex and your family trust is currently frozen under federal investigation. Your primary residence in Westchester is slated for seizure by Friday.”

Evelyn stared down at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. All the aristocratic arrogance, the condescending rules, the curated superiority—it had all evaporated into thin air, leaving behind only the terrified, desperate reality of people who had finally realized they picked a fight with someone infinitely stronger than them.

“You can't do this,” Melissa whispered, her voice trembling as she backed away from the steps. “We’re... we’re related.”

“Not anymore,” I said softly.

I reached behind the door frame, grabbed the brass deadbolt, and pulled the heavy oak door shut.

The click of the lock echoing through the foyer was the loudest, most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

I walked back into the living room, picked up my cup of coffee from the kitchen island, and looked out at the ocean. The waves kept rolling in, endless and powerful, washing the shoreline clean.

And the tide was finally ours.
