Chapter 2 - The Shockwave Through Oakridge High

Within four seconds of hitting send, the little grey typing bubbles in the group chat began to appear.

At first, it was just one or two dots bouncing erratically. Then four. Then seven.

My phone buzzed continuously on the kitchen counter like a trapped bee.

Mr. Harrison (Vice Principal): "Wait. Who is this? Is this phone number linked to Counselor Vance?"

Mrs. Gable (English Dept. Head): "Is this a joke? Please tell me this is a sick joke. Did our guidance counselor seriously steal a student’s prom dress to pay for Botox?"

Coach Davis: "Good lord. That’s her own niece, isn't it? I’m looking at the selfie right now. Is that the MedSpa off Maple Street?"

I stood in the quiet kitchen, sipping my cold tea, watching the digital implosion unfold in real-time. Teachers who had spent years exchanging polite faculty breakroom pleasantries with Vanessa were suddenly unmasking her character with brutal, unchecked honesty.

Mrs. Gable: "She looks right into our eyes every day telling us she cares about student welfare and emotional well-being, while she’s stealing from children? Unbelievable."

Mr. Harrison: "Counselor Vance, if you are reading this chat, report to the principal’s office immediately tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM sharp."

Before I could even lock my phone screen to put it away, my line rang aggressively.

Caller ID: Mother.

I let it ring out. It went to voicemail, only to immediately start vibrating again with an incoming call from Vanessa.

I slid my thumb across the screen, accepting the call, and brought the phone slowly to my ear.

“CLAIRE!”

Vanessa’s voice wasn't dripping with casual amusement anymore. It was shrill, cracked with absolute panic, and vibrating with blind fury.

“How dare you!” she shrieked through the speaker. “How could you send that into my work chat? Do you have any idea what you’ve just done? My entire department is blowing up my phone! Principal Hayes just emailed me asking for an explanation!”

I kept my voice terrifyingly calm, my tone slicing right through her hysterics.

“You sold my daughter’s dress, Vanessa. You laughed in my face. You mocked her pain and called her dress stupid. What did you honestly think was going to happen?”

“It was a joke!” she sobbed, the panic finally cracking her composure. “It was private family business! You’ve humiliated me in front of my entire administration! I could lose my job!”

“Then maybe you should have thought about that before you stole from a seventeen-year-old girl who worked her fingers to the bone to earn it,” I replied evenly. “Consider this your first professional lesson in accountability. Goodbye, Vanessa.”

I hung up the phone and blocked her number.
