Chapter 19 - The University Acceptance Letter

By mid-November, the mailbox began delivering the kind of news we had been dreaming of all year.

I was at my desk working when Lily burst through the front door, dropping her backpack on the floor with a resounding crash and holding a thick, official envelope high in the air.

“MOM! IT CAME!” she screamed, her face glowing with pure euphoria.

I jumped up from my chair so fast my office chair rolled backward and hit the wall. I ran into the hallway as Lily ripped open the envelope, pulling out the glossy acceptance packet.

Accepted with a presidential academic scholarship.

“You did it!” I shouted, lifting her off her feet as we spun around in the hallway, laughing and crying at the exact same time. “You actually did it, Lily! All your hard work, all those late nights... it paid off!”

That evening, we didn't just order takeout—we celebrated properly. We baked a celebratory chocolate cake, lit candles, and even invited my brother David to join us on a video call so Lily could share the thrilling news with him.

As we sat around the kitchen table laughing over cake crumbs, I looked at my daughter and felt a fierce, overwhelming wave of pride. She had faced an obstacle that would have broken many teenagers, but instead of letting bitterness consume her, she had turned her pain into fuel for her future.
