Chapter 10 - The Unexpected Delivery

I stood close behind Lily as she unfolded the card under the hallway light.

The handwriting wasn't my mother’s elegant script, nor was it Vanessa’s sharp print. It belonged to someone else entirely—someone who lived just down the street.

“Dear Lily,

I saw you leave for prom tonight in that stunning emerald dress, and it brought tears to my eyes. My granddaughter used to babysit for you years ago, and she always talked about how kind and hardworking you are.

I’m the neighbor two houses down—Mrs. Gable from the corner. I know your family has been going through a difficult time lately, and I wanted you to know that true grace always shines brighter than stolen luxury. Have a wonderful night.

— Mrs. Gable”

Taped to the inside of the card was a gift card to a local artisan ice cream parlor and a tiny, hand-painted paper star.

Lily stared at the note, her lower lip trembling slightly, before a wide, watery smile broke across her face. She looked up at me, a tear slipping down her cheek.

“People are so kind, Mom,” she whispered. “Even when others try to tear you down.”

“They really are, sweetie,” I said, wrapping my arms around her.

The drama with Vanessa and my mother felt miles away, fading into the background where it belonged. We had survived the storm, protected what mattered most, and proven that integrity and hard work can weather any betrayal.
