Chapter 12 - Inside the Administration Office

By 9:00 AM, I was seated across from Principal Hayes in his sunlit, oak-paneled office at Oakridge High.
The room smelled of old paper and polished wood. Principal Hayes looked older than he had a week ago, the lines around his eyes etched with the stress of managing a public scandal that had rocked the faculty breakroom.
“Thank you for coming in, Claire,” Principal Hayes said, setting his pen down on the mahogany desk and folding his hands. “I wanted to update you personally before the formal board meeting this afternoon.”
“How is the investigation going?” I asked calmly.
“It’s concluded,” the principal sighed, leaning back in his leather chair. “Following our digital audit of Vanessa’s department records and the overwhelming corroboration from the staff chat, the school board voted unanimously to terminate her contract effective immediately. Her credentials as a guidance counselor are also under formal review by the state board.”
I absorbed the news in silence. There was no sense of triumph, only a quiet realization of accountability. Actions had consequences, and professional misconduct at this level could not be swept under the rug simply because someone cried family loyalty.

“I’m sorry it had to come to this, Principal Hayes,” I said evenly. “Nobody wanted a public mess. But my daughter’s trust, and the trust of every student Vanessa was supposed to guide, had to come first.”
“You did what any good mother would do,” Principal Hayes nodded respectfully. “Oakridge High will move forward. We’re already looking for a replacement who truly understands what student advocacy means.”
