Chapter 17 - Words Too Late, Yet Not Too Late

I unfolded the paper and read the words quietly to myself, though I knew Lily deserved to hear them too.

“Dear Claire and Lily,

I don't expect you to forgive me immediately, and perhaps I don't even deserve a reply. For a very long time, I believed that being a mother meant shielding my youngest child from the consequences of her own flaws, even if it meant sacrificing the happiness of my eldest daughter and my granddaughter.

Watching Vanessa spiral into the wreckage of her own choices has broken my heart, but watching the way you both stood tall with dignity and grace has finally opened my eyes. I was wrong. I was blind to the unfairness I fostered for decades.

I am taking steps to change, Claire. Vanessa has moved into a small apartment across town to sort out her life independently, and I am learning, for the first time in my life, to live without enabling her chaos. I hope, in time, you can find it in your hearts to let me back into your lives—not as the matriarch who demands blind loyalty, but simply as a mother and grandmother who loves you both.

With all my love,

Mom”

When I finished reading, the kitchen was completely silent save for the hum of the refrigerator.

Lily looked at me, her eyes thoughtful and mature far beyond her seventeen years. She didn't look angry, nor did she look eager to jump back into a toxic cycle. She looked at peace.

May you like

“What do you think, Mom?” she asked quietly.

“I think she finally understands,” I answered, folding the letter neatly and placing it on the counter. “It doesn't erase the past, and things will never go back to the way they were. But healing is possible, as long as we keep our boundaries strong.”
