The following Saturday morning brought a crisp, brilliant autumn day, perfect for a fresh start.
While Lily was out studying with friends at the local library, I took advantage of the quiet hours to tackle a project I had been putting off for months: cleaning out the old storage bins in the garage.
Buried beneath old winter coats and childhood school projects, I found a cardboard box labeled Family Archives. Inside were old photo albums from decades past—pictures of my grandparents, sepia prints of old road trips, and forgotten snapshots of a younger, more innocent family dynamic.

I traced my finger over the image, feeling a profound sense of closure.

I closed the photo album, slid it back onto the shelf, and stepped out into the warm midday sunlight. My phone remained quiet in my pocket, undisturbed by toxic demands or manipulative guilt trips.
The past was behind us. The future was wide open. And as I looked down the sunlit street toward home, I knew that whatever chapters came next, we were finally the ones holding the pen.
