Chapter 7 - The Phoenix Safehouse

By mid-morning, we pulled up to a secure, modern residential property in an upscale, quiet neighborhood on the northern outskirts of Phoenix—a home owned by one of Dad’s long-time business associates who was currently out of the country on an overseas infrastructure project.

It was a stark contrast to the dingy motel rooms, bus stations, and family shelters I had been hiding in. The house featured high ceilings, cool tile floors, a sunlit nursery overlooking a manicured backyard, and an absolute absence of toxic energy or fear.

As soon as we stepped inside, Dad set down our bags and gently took Lily from my arms.

“Why don't you go take a long, hot shower, Em?” Dad suggested warmly, bouncing Lily on his hip as she giggled. “I’ll whip up some scrambled eggs and toast, and we can set up the nursery for the little boss here.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of despair. They were tears of profound, overwhelming gratitude.

“Thank you, Dad,” I whispered, hugging him tightly around the shoulders with Lily sandwiched safely between us.

“Always, sweetheart,” he murmured, kissing the top of my head. “Go on.”

Twenty minutes later, standing beneath the steaming spray of the master bathroom shower, I let the hot water wash away the lingering grime of the past week. I scrubbed away the dirt of the bus stations, the stale air of the shelter, and the suffocating memory of Ethan’s voice. When I stepped out and wrapped myself in a fluffy white towel, I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

The dark circles under my eyes were still there, and the faint bruise on my jaw was fading to a yellowish hue, but the terrified girl who had cowered in fear was gone. In her place stood a mother who had reclaimed her life.
