Chapter 14 - The First Sunset Walk

By late Friday afternoon, the desert heat had softened into a warm, gentle breeze carrying the scent of desert sage and blooming oleander.

With Lily resting quietly inside after a long afternoon of playing in the sandbox Dad had built for her in the yard, I stepped out onto the front porch. Dad was sitting in one of the wooden rocking chairs, watching the sun begin its slow descent toward the jagged western horizon.

The sky was a breathtaking canvas of burning orange, deep violet, and molten gold.

I pulled my light cardigan around my shoulders and sat down in the rocking chair beside him, watching the brilliant colors shift across the desert sky.

“You know, Dad,” I began quietly, breaking the peaceful silence. “When I saw you standing in that grocery store aisle a week ago, I thought my life was completely ruined.”

Dad turned his head, his eyes reflecting the warm amber glow of the sunset. He reached over, resting his hand gently over mine.

“You didn't ruin your life, Em. You made a mistake trusting someone who didn't deserve you. There’s a big difference,” Dad said softly. “When a bridge is built on bad soil, it cracks. But that doesn't mean you stop building bridges. It just means you learn how to test the foundation before you pour the concrete.”

I squeezed his hand back, feeling the strength and warmth in his calloused fingers. “And what kind of foundation do we have now?”

Dad smiled, looking out toward the endless expanse of the desert horizon stretching before us.

“Bedrock, Em. Solid, unshakeable bedrock.”
