Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Horizon

New Year’s Eve arrived with a brilliant, starlit canopy that turned the quiet neighborhood into a peaceful haven.
We didn't go out to crowded parties or stay up waiting for chaotic countdowns. Instead, we wrapped ourselves in thick quilts on the back patio loungers, watching the distant, colorful fireworks blooming softly against the horizon.
Lily had fallen asleep against my shoulder hours ago, breathing softly, her small hand resting securely in mine.
Dad sat in the rocking chair beside us, resting his hands on his knees, his eyes fixed on the brilliant array of winter stars overhead.
“What are you thinking about, Dad?” I whispered softly, careful not to wake Lily.
Dad turned his head, a quiet, peaceful smile touching his lips.
“I was just thinking about blank pages, Claire,” he said softly. “You spent years living in a book written by someone else—a story full of rules, cages, and conditions.”
He reached out, resting his warm hand over mine and Lily’s.
“Now, the book is yours. Every single page, every chapter, every choice.”
I looked down at my sleeping daughter, whose chest rose and fell in a steady, unburdened rhythm. Then I looked out across our quiet, beautiful yard, stretching endlessly into the dark, starlit night.
The storm had tried to break us. The fall had tested every limit of our endurance. But out of the wreckage, we had built something far stronger than glass and money.

We had built a real home.
And as the clock struck midnight and the new year began, I knew with absolute, unshakable certainty that our horizon was wide open, bright, and unbroken.
