Chapter 15 - A New Chapter Begins

Saturday morning broke crisp, clear, and full of promise.

We decided to celebrate our first fully independent weekend by heading out to a local farmers' market in downtown Phoenix. It was a simple, normal activity—something I hadn't been allowed to do freely in years without Ethan criticizing where we went or how much we spent.

Lily rode proudly on Dad’s shoulders, pointing excitedly at colorful displays of fresh fruit, handmade crafts, and local pastries.

I walked beside them, holding a wicker basket filled with fresh strawberries, artisanal bread, and bright yellow daffodils. The morning air was warm and clean, and for the first time in as long as I could remember, I felt completely invisible to the past—not hiding from fear, but entirely present in the joy of the moment.

As we paused near a shaded fountain where a local acoustic guitarist was playing a gentle melody, Lily leaned down and patted Dad’s head.

“Grandpa, can we get blueberry muffins?” she asked sweetly.

Dad chuckled, reaching up to adjust her little sun hat. “We can get all the blueberry muffins in Arizona, bug. It’s official policy.”

I laughed, looking up at the bright blue desert sky overhead.

The nightmare in New York was a closed book. The desert had tested us, broken our old illusions, and forged something infinitely stronger in their place.

We had survived the fall. We had reclaimed our lives. And as we walked side by side into the bright morning sun, I knew that every single chapter ahead of us belonged entirely to us.
