Chapter 13 - A Visit from Daniel Brooks

Thursday afternoon brought an unexpected visitor to the Phoenix safehouse.
We were sitting on the back patio enjoying a light lunch when the front gate intercom chimed. Dad walked over to check the camera monitor and pressed the release button.
Moments later, Daniel Brooks walked around the side of the house, carrying a thick leather portfolio case. Gone was his formal courtroom suit; he wore a sharp blazer over an open-collared shirt, looking relaxed in the desert warmth.
“Afternoon, Richard, Emily,” Daniel greeted us, pulling out a chair and sitting down at the patio table. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything critical.”
“Not at all, Daniel,” I smiled, pouring him a glass of iced tea. “We were just taking a break before Lily’s afternoon nap. What brings you out to the north side?”
Daniel took a sip of the tea, setting his portfolio on the table. “I was meeting with the federal district clerk downtown regarding the final asset liquidation filings for Ethan and Evelyn Vance, and I figured I’d drop off the certified copies of your divorce decree and full custody orders in person.”
He opened the portfolio and slid a thick, official document bound with a blue ribbon across the table.
I picked it up, running my fingers over the gold-embossed seal. The legal process that usually took months or years had been accelerated through federal asset forfeiture provisions and clear-cut evidence of systematic fraud.
“It’s really, officially over,” I whispered, staring at my name written clearly on the line granting sole, unencumbered custody of Lily.
“It’s over,” Daniel confirmed gently. “Ethan’s defense counsel tried to cut a desperate plea deal yesterday morning, offering to surrender all remaining claims to your personal assets in exchange for leniency on the wire fraud counts. The federal prosecutor laughed them out of the room.”
Dad leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms with a satisfied smirk. “Play stupid games with federal infrastructure and interstate wire regulations, win a long-term stay in a concrete box.”
“Precisely,” Daniel agreed. “As of this morning, Emily, your financial footprint is completely scrubbed of any association with the Vance estate. All personal accounts are secured, your credit is frozen against fraudulent debt, and you have complete legal autonomy.”

I looked from Daniel to my father, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders. The ghosts of my marriage were officially exorcised, locked away behind steel bars and federal ink.
