Chapter 16 - The Roots Take Hold

By late November, the desert winter had settled into a comfortable, sunlit tranquility. The scorching intensity of the summer months gave way to crisp, breezy mornings and afternoons warm enough for light sweaters.

In the study, my remote logistics career was thriving. My manager at the humanitarian network had already commended my coordination of a regional medical supply run, and the steady influx of professional success was rebuilding my confidence brick by brick. I wasn't just surviving anymore; I was excelling.

Out in the backyard, Dad and Lily had turned amateur gardening into a serious weekend project. With the help of some rich organic soil and carefully selected winter-hardy plants, they had converted a corner of the yard into a vibrant garden bed of green shoots and colorful snapdragons.

When Lily ran inside for a glass of water on a Tuesday afternoon, her cheeks were glowing with health, and her laugh sounded carefree and light.

“Mommy, come look! The little green leaves are standing up straight!” she announced, holding up a small gardening trowel like a magic wand.

“They know who’s in charge of the yard now,” I smiled, wiping a smudge of dirt from her nose.
