Chapter 19 - The Desert Winter Sanctuary

When December arrived, bringing crisp, cool desert nights and brilliant starlit skies, our home truly felt like an unshakeable sanctuary.
On a Saturday morning, the thermometer dipped low enough to require a crackling fire in the living room stone hearth. Orange flames danced against the stones, casting long, cozy shadows across the tile floor.
Lily and I bundled up in light jackets to check on the winter garden while Dad stood on the back patio holding a steaming mug of dark roast coffee.
“Make sure the frost covers are tucked in tight, bug!” Dad called out, chuckling as I helped Lily drape a protective sheet over her favorite snapdragons.
“Don't worry, Chief!” I shouted back, brushing dirt off my gardening gloves. “We’re following strict environmental guidelines for desert flora!”
Lily giggled uncontrollably, pressing her hands against her knees.
As I stood back to admire our work, the warm desert sun breaking through the morning chill, I took a deep, clear breath. The physical exhaustion and emotional terror of the past were entirely gone, replaced by a deep, powerful strength that felt as solid as the foundation of the house itself.
