Chapter 20 - Beyond the MedalThe sun began its slow descent toward the horizon, painting the Atlantic ocean in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and fiery orange.

Lucas and Clara walked hand-in-hand down to the edge of the granite cliffs overlooking the water. The four boys ran ahead of them, skipping flat stones across the gentle tide pool below.

Clara looked up at Lucas, her hand slipping inside his pocket, fingers intertwining with his.

"Do you ever miss it?" Clara asked gently. "The uniform? The command? The medals?"

Lucas looked out at his four sons laughing as Mason successfully skipped a stone five times across the water. Then he turned his head and looked at Clara—the woman who had fought through hell, crossed oceans, and defied an empire to save their children and give him back his soul.

"I spent years thinking my greatest achievement was a medal pinned to my chest by a general," Lucas said, his voice deep, warm, and filled with emotion. "I was wrong."

He pulled Clara close, wrapping his arm around her as they stood together on the edge of the sea, watching the golden sunlight bathe their children in warm light.

"My medal was never made of silver," Lucas whispered, pressing a tender, loving kiss to Clara’s lips. "It was standing right here all along."
