Chapter 17 - The Fall of the DynastyThe heavy vault doors slid open with a hydraulic hiss.

Lucas stepped out into the gallery, keeping Clara and the four boys protected behind him.
Julian was forced to his knees by two federal marshals, stainless steel handcuffs snapping tight around his wrists. He looked up at Lucas, his face twisted in unbridled, pathetic rage.
"You destroyed everything, Lucas!" Julian spit, blood trickling from a cut on his lip. "Our wealth! Our legacy! The Vance name was built to rule, and you reduced it to dust for a field nurse and four lab experiments!"
Lucas walked slowly up to his older brother. He didn't raise his fist. He didn't raise his voice. He looked at Julian with nothing but cold, profound pity.

Lucas reached down to his own collar. He unpinned the Silver Star medal—the highest honor he had earned serving the country—and dropped it onto the floor in front of Julian.
"Keep the medals, Julian," Lucas said softly. "I don't need them anymore."

Clara looked up as Lucas walked into the room. He had washed the soot from his face and changed into a simple dark sweater and jeans.

"Is it really over?" Clara asked, her voice trembling with six years of pent-up exhaustion.
Lucas sat down beside her, taking her hand and weaving his fingers tightly through hers. "It's over, Clara. The data is gone. The company is finished. We're free."
