Chapter 10 - The Price of BloodLucas checked his sidearm. Five rounds left in the magazine. Clara had four.

Twenty heavily armed mercenaries outside, equipped with thermal optics and body armor.

"Lucas," Clara said softly, pulling the four boys behind the stone chimney. "We can't win a fire-fight here."

"I know," Lucas said. He turned to Ethan, Liam, Mason, and Noah. He knelt down so he was at eye level with the four little boys who shared his blood.

"Listen to me," Lucas said, his voice absolute and grounded with fierce love. "No matter what happens out there tonight, you four stay together. Protect your mother. Do you understand?"

The four boys nodded silently. Mason, the quietest of the quadruplets, reached out and touched the Silver Star medal pinned to Lucas’s torn dress uniform jacket.

"You're not coming with us, Father," Mason stated, not as a question, but as a calculated fact.

Lucas smiled gently, a faint, proud tear cutting through the dust on his cheek. "I’m going to buy you time. There's a snowmobile under a tarp behind the shed. Clara, take the boys and head north toward the Canadian border. There's a contact in Quebec named General Vance—my uncle. He's the only one in the family who stayed clean."

"Lucas, no!" Clara grabbed his tactical vest, her voice breaking. "I lost you once! I won't lose you again!"

"You didn't lose me six years ago, Clara," Lucas said, kissing her deeply, fiercely, holding her face in his hands. "And you're not losing me tonight. I am stopping Julian here."

Lucas stood up, racked the slide of his pistol, and kicked open the front door of the cabin.

He stepped out into the blinding glare of ten high-power tactical spotlights mounted on snow-tractors. The cold wind howled around him, blowing his open uniform jacket back.

Julian stood thirty yards away, surrounded by a wall of rifle barrels pointed directly at Lucas's chest.

"Where are the children, Luke?" Julian asked smoothly, stepping forward. "Give them to me, and I might let you live out your days in a comfortable psychiatric facility."

Lucas raised his gun, pointing it not at Julian, but directly at the main fuel tank of the industrial snow-tractor parked next to the cabin's gas supply lines.

"You forgot one thing about Father's safehouse design, Julian," Lucas said, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face.

"What's that?" Julian scoffed, raising his hand to order his snipers to fire.

"He built it over a natural gas vent," Lucas replied.
